The DJ announces that it’s time to cut your cake. More often than not, couples pick up the knife & look at me exclaiming, “what do we do?”. This usually results in a giggle between us all because in this moment, no one has ever cut a cake together before! SO I figured I would share some insight here on how you should cut your cake (if you are doing so for your big day).

1. Most couples will hold the knife together. Whoever wants to be deemed as “the lead” would hold the knife first & then the other person will hold the knife over their hand. Sounds a bit clunky because it is. I’ve had some couples designate one person to cut the cake and the other serve too if this doesn’t seem your speed.
2. You’ll cut one of the bottom tiers! The top tier is traditionally saved for you to freeze and eat on your first anniversary. If you don’t plan to save the top tier, feel free to cut that bad boy! It’s completely up to you and what you would like to cut.
3. Discuss your feeding method prior to your wedding! Your photos likely aren’t quite done at this point & a lot of time and effort went into your look. Making sure you and your spouse are on the same page with this is so important. It would be heartbreaking if you preferred not to have cake smooshed in your face & your spouse did this.
4. Make sure there is a knife & plate at the cake station. I frequently find myself scrambling for these two items (that usually get pulled from the head table in a pinch) because there was no serving ware at the cake table. Doesn’t need to be a fancy custom knife but having something nearby does help!
5. Cut one “slice” out of the cake. There is a chance your catering staff will be whisking it away to prep for guests. You do not need to make this slice pretty or feel the need to cut the entire cake yourself.

Bonus tip! Make sure your cake has plenty of space around it and decent light (if this is an important moment for you). Due to the fragility of cakes, they are frequently placed in spaces that are quite tight. This means while photographing the moment, things can be a bit challenging. If cake cutting is super important to you, making sure there is ample space around it will help immensely!
